“Not So Serious Burns” is a 35 minute theatre-in-education play on the life and work of the national bard of the Scots and Ulster Scots - Robert Burns.  3rd-6th class attended the drama on Thursday 23rd January.

It is fair to say that the children really enjoyed the performance by the Ulster Scots. We were introduced to the character called Rabbie, his wife Jean and best friend Archie. As the play began, Rabbie shared his first poem that he wrote at 15 years of age called ‘Once I Loved A Bonny Lass’. This taught us how poetry was such a big part of Rabbie’s life. 

As the play continued, we heard some bagpipes being played and Rabbie’s wife taught us some highland dancing. It was great fun.

The characters reminded us that Burn’s Night is celebrated on the 25th January each year (Rabbie’s birthday). To celebrate Burn’s Night one must prepare a haggis. In the play, the haggis was piped in and ceremonially served. They invited 4 children to come to the front and taste the haggis. At the end of the play, we all joined together and sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ 

Children and staff both enjoyed the play. The drama was excellent. A huge thank you to the Ulster Scots!
