School Closure Work for Mrs. Lochner’s, 2nd and 3rd Class

Hello again everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the break over the Easter holidays as much as possible given the current situation.

I would just like to thank those parents that have emailed me, it has been lovely to hear from you and have a sense of contact with how your child is doing at home. I have also been able to help guide parents on how to log on to the websites that are providing access to the e-books required for home learning as this can be anything but straight forward!

Also, to those children that have been doing activities on the Seesaw app, I have loved seeing your faces on your video recordings and hearing your voices on the audio recordings. I have added more activities onto the app and I hope you enjoy doing them at your leisure as they are there to act as a reprieve from the books!

If you haven’t already contacted me via email I would urge you to do so as I can assist you  and your child much better this way. I will also be including log in details for my Symbaloo account which has all the necessary online links to the books and activities that your child will need going forward. I can also provide you with the log on details for your child on the Seesaw app so that they can have a little break from the books but are still learning.

Second Class:

Numeracy:

Planet Maths 2nd Class – Area p. 119+120

p.119 –

A – Choose objects that you have at home that can cover the top of your table. Always estimate first and then do the measuring.

C – Draw each shape as neatly as you can and as much as possible in a similar size to the ones in the picture and colour.

  1. 120 -

A - Draw a tick or an x at the end of each sentence.

B – Again, choosing suitable objects that you have at home use them to estimate and the measure the surface area of a flat surface that you have at home such as the top of a laptop, the side of a cereal box, a section of worktop etc.

**Busy at Maths 2** – Renaming in subtraction (You will find a direct link to this e-book and interactive activities on my Symbaloo account)

There are links on my Symbaloo page to two very useful YouTube videos that explain Renaming to children and these would a very useful way to introduce the topic.

The online tutorials are all available on **mycjfallon.ie** and access is free for parents at the moment, just use your own details to register for an account.

Do the tutorial for each page and then the interactive activity. Once these have been done correctly and you’re happy with your child’s understanding they can then complete the written tasks as shown on the page but into their copy.

Please ensure that they write all out exactly as it is shown on the page and as neatly as possible.

 

Children need plenty of practice with renaming so please do as much practice as you can with this topic. Make up some of your own sums into their copy for them to complete if you feel there is not enough on the above pages.

 

Mental Maths:

Each day your child should choose a challenge form the following website; https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Second Class children choose Level 2, and then the topic they would like to practice, followed by the time they would like between each sum and then complete and self-correct by pressing Reveal All at the end.

Maths Challenge – Next 4 tests

Revise all addition tables and also practice the same using subtraction. Test your child as regularly as possible.

 

Literacy:

Writing :

Skills Book H – Finish any work that hasn’t already been done from the last instalment of work.

Spelling:

Spell Well – If you have already reached p.52 in your Spell Well just revise over the spellings from the the last 4 weeks, if you haven’t completed as far as p. 52 please do so. (Remember to test your child’s spellings as regularly as possible.)

Writing genre – Persuasive Writing

For this fortnight I would like you to make a plan for a letter to Monaghan County Council persuading them to build new toilet facilities and a lunch room at Rossmore Park.

I will attach the power-point presentation, checklist and examples of persuasive writing in my email to all parents.

Day 1+2 – Use the checklist provided to read through the letter example “Recycling Plastic Waste” and highlight/underline/circle/colour each feature that you identify in the letter.

Day 3+4 – Use the same checklist to read through the letter example “Harry Kane” and highlight/underline/circle/colour each feature that you identify in the letter.

Day 5+6 – Use the Word Bank provided to find and highlight/colour typical persuasive vocabulary in the letter example “Superhero.”

Day 7+8 -Go through the power-point presentation and discuss each slide orally with your parent/minder, thinking ahead to what you might include in your own plan.

Day 9 – Use the following slide as a guide to start planning your letter but write it into your copy.

A – Use the above link to play lots of interactive games to introduce the topic.

B -  Write each shape name and description and draw picture into your copy.

p.120; A + B

  1. 121;

Write the definition of regular and irregular shapes into your copy and use a different colour to highlight each one.

A – List the regular shapes and the irregular shapes by their letter (a, b, c, d etc.) into your copy.

Write the definition of tessellation into your copy.

C – List the shapes that tessellate by their number

  1. 122 – All and have some fun with your own tessellation pattern in C. Don’t forget to use colours!
  2. 123 –“D” only.

 

Symmetry – again use the game available on Folens.ie to introduce the topic.

  1. 133 – Only draw the symmetrical shapes into your copy and draw the line of symmetry onto them.
  2. 134 –

A – Instead of the classroom, look around your kitchen or living room for symmetrical shapes.

B – Write in the names of the countries that have symmetrical flags.

C – Draw the shapes as accurately as possible into your copy and include the line of symmetry in each one.

Write in the definition at the top of the page and then draw each shape and include all the lines of symmetry that each one has in A and B. 1.

  1. 136 – B – Create your own symmetrical picture and draw in the line of symmetry.

**For those logged onto Seesaw I will have an activity uploaded where your child can record themselves reciting the poem and I can listen to them and provide feedback.**

  1. 103 –Use the pictures at the top of the page to help fill in the missing words below.
  2. 107 – The pictures at the end of each sentence gives you the hint of what the missing word is. The picture above has all the vocabulary in it.
  3. 114 – Use the story above to find the correct verb that goes at the start of each sentence and write the sentences into your copy.

Active Week May 5th – 8th!

Had we been able to be in school we would be celebrating Active Week by doing lots of physical activities every day. As this is not possible I would ask you to try and choose one activity from the following suggestions to do each day or as when it is possible. You can choose to do these on your own, with your siblings or even with your parents!

  • Go to the local park, or any open green area.
  • Go for a walk together, a cycle, a scoot.
  • Bring some chalk outside and draw hopscotch markings, have a game.
  • Teach your child to skip, or have a skipping competition.
  • Challenge your child to teach you a new skill or activity that they learned in PE class at school.
  • Grab a football, basketball, a sliothar or even a tennis ball. Be creative with the amount of different ways you can play with this. Throw it, bounce it, kick it: your child will come up with lots of ideas if you ask them.
  • Be active in the house too. There are lots of things you can do, from active video gaming to games like Twister to GoNoodle, a popular website teachers use for integrating physical activity in the classroom.
