5th & 6th classes were delighted to visit the World War 1 exhibition in Johnston and Madden Memorial Hall on the North Road earlier this month.  The exhibition was being held to commemorate the ending of the first World War and was a really exciting start to our studies of World War 1 in History.  We were amazed to find so many objects loaned to the exhibition by people who wanted the story of brave but ordinary people who risked and sometimes gave their lives for the good of those back home.
Downstairs, having been greeted by the General in charge, we saw a recreation of a field hospital and the equipment used in it.  We also heard  stories of life on the battlefield and the reality of living in the trenches.  Upstairs we got to try on and handle replica and real items, many of which were over 100 years old.  We were surprised at some of the cleverly folded equipment soldiers fitted into their kit bags, like the roll up saw.  There was lots of ammunition to see of all different sizes.  We heard the story of the young soldier whose life was saved by the army issue Bible that he carried in his pocket, and got to hold his Bible and the bullet which lodged in it, saving his life. We saw samples of trench art and the medals worth thousands earned by the brave soldiers from Monaghan and beyond.
So many stories, so much to learn.  We return to the classroom enthused to learn some more on this fascinating topic.
Can we find anyone in our ancestry with a wonderful story to tell?  And will we be their voice 100 years on?
