September STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

STEM

Every Friday afternoon we finish off the week with our much loved STEM activity and each week brings a new challenge for the children. They have to work as a team to solve the problem given to them, using only the materials provided by teacher. Each activity provides learning through Science and Maths and gives ample opportunity for them to explore their cooperative skills by having to listen to others, share their own ideas and opinions and compromising. It is a very valuable and enjoyable project that we look forward to each week.

Pictured above

are the children creating their first STEM item - Pom Pom Slingshots

For this lesson they were asked to create a slingshot using lollipop sticks, elastic bands and a pom-pom. The aim was to create the slingshot that could launch the pom-pom the furthest distance. This required them to use their measuring skills as well. The children really enjoyed trying to make their design work and then improving it so as to increase the distance travelled by the slingshot.
