Hi everyone,

I hope you are all keeping busy and you and your families are well. There has been some lovely sunshine and I hope you have enjoyed some playtime outdoors. I have seen pictures of some of the things you have been doing to keep busy. Some very creative ideas. Keep it up!

You can send me some pictures using the class email address you should receive very soon. I would love to see what you have been up to. Remember keep active and have fun. Ride your bike, help in the garden, spot some of those spring flowers we were learning about and get the wellies on and explore.

Below is a plan of work to keep you busy and learning for the next week.  Remember I fully understand that every ones family situation is different, so therefore do what you can. There is no need to stress or feel under pressure. If every child reads a little, writes a little every day and does  some number work or maths topic work to keep up their skills that would be great.

Numeracy: This week we focus on Money (1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c coins) and Number Work

Money: Suggestions

  • If you have any 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c coins you can do some coin rubbings.
  • Create a little shop – put some price labels on small toys. Play shop with your child. Siblings could play this game together. Using real coins is best and focus on the coins mentioned above.
  • Have a real snack shop, where you give your child some of the above coins. Create a price list of snacks they may ask for during the day. They can use their coins to purchase these. They might even get to keep any left over money. See the photograph to help with this.
  • Encourage your child to use a 5c+1c coin to purchase something that is 6c instead of always using 1c+1c+1c+1c+1c+1c. In this way they will learn that 1c+1c+1c+1c+1c=5c and 5c+5c=10c etc.
  • You can access the pupil text book pages for this work if you go to folensonline.ie Planet Maths Senior Infants ebook pages 108-114
  • Number: Suggestions

Keep revising number formation, and the number facts for numbers 2-9

Practice writing your numbers outside on the ground with chalk or paint them with water and a brush

Begin with 8 small objects. Put these 8 objects into 2 groups – record the sum 2+6=8. Continue to make new sets until you have found and recorded all the number facts for number 8.

Draw sets of 8 objects, 9 objects, 6 objects etc.

Write some numbers on a page, add some sums your older sibling or a parent writes out for you – totals to 10

  •
  • Literacy

    • Learn the spellings dated for this week 30th March – 3rd April and write a sentence or 2 every day.
    • Read a book –either one from your own shelf, one I sent home or an online book – Log onto the Oxford Owl website and follow the links to select a book for your child to read.
    • Ready, Steady, Write! Handwriting Book – Capital Letters J page 40 and W page 41

You can work on in the little handwriting book that was sent home at your own pace.

    • Report writing: We had begun a unit of work on report writing before school closed.

Write a report on ‘Spring Flowers’ if it suits your family situation to do so. You can first complete p93 in the text book ‘Over the Moon’ then write your own independent report. See the photo of a sample report to help you. Three or four sentences is sufficient. Remember a report has a title, some descriptive language and sometimes a labelled picture. To help you, you may wish to access the website ‘Gill Explore’ Over the Moon - Unit 7 ‘Getting Ready for Spring’. Click on The Grey Bar at the top of they page 'All resource types' and scroll down. The Genre story ebook and the Non Fiction  Reader ebook may be of interest to you.

      SESE

I had planned to do some planting with the children and I was planning a Flower Sale on Friday 3rd April where parents would come in and buy some plants/flowers for their garden. Unfortunately this will no longer go ahead. You may however do some planting and or gardening at home.

A Grass Environment: Take your child out to the garden or a grass area. What can you see? Any flowers, stones, insects, etc. Collect some things for a nature display. Draw what you find and label the pictures or make a nature collage.

Access History, Geography and Science (See symbaloo Webmix for link)

      Art

Try drawing or painting some spring flowers – use any colour medium you have: chalks, crayons, markers, paint

Make a nature collage with things you find in the garden

      Religious Education

Why not read the Easter story with your family over the next few weeks. (Link on symbaloo page)

Easter is just around the corner and we don’t want to forget the reason why we celebrate it.

Remember there is no obligation to complete all of the above. Pick and choose what you can and what will work for you in your situation.

Young children are continually learning as they play and talk with their families every day. I hope you are all keeping safe and I really miss you all and look forward to seeing you all when school re-opens.
