During the month of January Junior Infants adopted the role of Polar Explorers. Our classroom was transformed into the Arctic Region filled with Arctic animals, an igloo, water and lots of lots of ice! In the Role Play area the children wrapped up warm to face the Arctic conditions. They packed their bags and off they went on their adventures, spotting many familiar animals on their way.

We learned how all these animals cope in the cold conditions, what they eat and where they sleep. We focused particularly on the Polar Bear. In English we worked on Oral Reports. The children were given the opportunity to give a report on the Polar Bear. The children thoroughly enjoyed showcasing their knowledge while developing speaking skills. The audience worked hard on being good listeners and were very encouraging to those giving reports.

Construction Area

‘The Arctic Hotel’ was constructed using Polydron building blocks. The children were sure to include a reception area, a family room and a swimming pool. Let’s hope the pool is heated!

The children also constructed their own Arctic play area using shoe boxes although some children were keen to head to the Antarctic in search of penguins!

 Water Area

In Science we investigated heat and the effect it has on ice. We observed the thawing process and learned how melting ice in the Arctic area is making life very difficult for the Polar Bears.

 Creative Area

We used sponge painting technique to create our favourite Polar animal and added the features using a brush. Have a look at the finished pieces – the Polar Bear was a firm favourite!
