2018 - 2019

Celebrating World Book Day was the most comfortable day in school EVER!

We celebrated Work Book Day by having a 'Bedtime Theme'.

The children had to come to school in their PJs and bring a book with them.

During the day, the children had the opportunity to read their book in their PJs. However, to make it even more like bedtime, the children all had a lovely cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows to accompany their reading time!

Fifth class were learning about 3D Shapes and Prisms.

They had a fabulous time testing different types of sweet treats to see if they were prisms or not.

They had to categorise the sweet treats after slicing them. If the shape stayed the same shape after being sliced, then it was a prism. If the shape changed to a different shape, then it was not a prism.

During Maths Week, Fourth and Fifth Class completed lots of activities.

One of the activities was 'Mathopoly'. We all enjoyed it and loved applying our Monopoly skills too.

Check out these fabulous Valentines' gifts made by Fourth and Fifth class.

The children created a pinch pot using clay. Each pot was beautiful and the children worked very hard on perfecting them. They were beautiful gifts for Valentine's day.

On Valentine's day, the children created cards. The children were encouraged to think of their own interests and create a spin on it.

Some John Deere fans titled their card with 'You are very DEERE to me', while others had 'Spreading the Love' illustrated along with a slurry tanker , 'Bee my Valentine' illustrated along with a bee and of course the special 'Happy Valentine's Day' title illustrated with lovely Valentine themed pictures.

Mrs Marshall's classroom have learned so much about trees, forests and plants. We learned how forests are so important and that The Amazon Rainforest is the lungs of the Earth.

The children created their own mini rainforests in jam jars.

They had to layer the jam jar with over 1cm of stones, add soil, water and seeds.

It was a great experiment. We had a great time watching the plants grow too.

We took part in Food Dudes for one week and really enjoyed sampling different fruit and vegetables.

Last Friday, we dressed in the colour of the fruit or vegetable in our lunchbox.

As a treat, we even got to make strawberry and banana smoothies.

Yum!!

Fourth and fifth class went on a fieldtrip around St Peter’s Lake to observe man-made and natural items. We had great fun and spotted lots of materials on our trip.

Boys and Girls,

I know this is tough to have to work on alone on Maths when we are all apart but we have done quite a bit on area already.  You are all doing a great job so far!   Read the examples and clues carefully.  I am using the text book each time that is easiest for you to work from on your own and ordering the sums so they come in baby steps from what you already know.  Try your best.  Read the clues written here for each type of sum that you need to do.  If you really can’t get a particular sum move on to the next and I will work through it in your corrections and set you a similar one to try again yourself.

Read CAREFULLY and THINK clearly.  I have every faith in you.

But Don’t STRESS!  Email me instead. We will have a Bob-The- Builder moment!  Just do your best. Mrs K

PS Don’t forget my usual rant:  Title EVERY page!  Number every sum!

Hi everyone,

I have loved seeing all your photos and videos of the activities during the week. Here are a few more ideas to keep you busy and learning this week. Keep out in the sunshine and make the most of this fabulous weather.

Dear Parents,

Keep an eye on the website too as we may update it with general information for our class.

Thinking of you all in these surreal days,

Kind regards,

Lorna Kelso & Melissa Heaslip

Please double check if you have already corrected your Maths I have amended Q2 answers.  I copied wrong section from answer book.  Apologies if you had already viewed the incorrect set.  See how important it is to double check all you do!!!

Note:  Please make sure you do the iknowit activities on Capacity: Metric not Standard for both classes.  You won't be able to sign in to iknowit until your parents send me their email address to send your personal login details to.  Each person's is individual so you need your own details.

Read Chapter 5 'The Beaches of Ireland'  and answer questions 1 - 6.

Date, label and rule in your copy.

As you know we have been directed to set work for this period.  As we are aware that some of you may be working from home or children may be away from you with relations etc I have tried to set work that children can go on with on their own.

The bulk of work for 5th & 6th is their History project which we were just beginning last week.  As I will not be working with them on it every few days and they now must complete it on their own, I have included simplified instructions and shortened it.  We have spent considerable time since Christmas in learning research and reporting skills and the children are very able in working on this by themselves.  A paragraph along with diagrams, photos, a map, etc is sufficient and very long passages of writing are not necessarily needed.

I have also set operations and weight which we have been working on in Maths is also good revision for both classes.  Other areas such as Science, RE, Music and Art will help provide variety without stress but should not be considered essential if they are struggling to complete their project.

As children in our class are older and many have their own, or access to, devices I am loading each subject page individually as they can screen shot and print them (if they wish/ have a printer to do so) and are easier to see for themselves and will hopefully therefore be easier for you also.

Work set should be done to the best of their ability but if your child is worried about an activity or a question or one topic of their project, I am quite happy for you to advise them to skip on to the next.  Please emphasise to them that we would not want any child to be worrying about their work.

I hope these activities will prove useful in keeping your child learning over this period.  Reading their book for the oral language challenge would also be a good distraction from all that's going on.   Other activities are also listed on the News & Updates section of the website.

Thank you for your help in helping your child access this information.

We hope each one of you and yours stay safe and well, and we look forward to seeing your children back in school as normal.

If for some reason you did not get your Science book home please just click below to see pictures of the pages you needed from Edco Window on the World Science to do this fortnight's work.  As several publishers are now kindly granting free access to parents and pupils to online versions of their books, in future I will put a link to the ebook in this section so don't worry about not having your book home.  Just click below if you need the pages for this period of work laughing

School Trip to AWOL

3rd and 4th class went on their school tour to AWOL in Emyvale. Despite the wet weather, we had a blast of a time.

As part of our History lessons we have been learning about 'When my Grandparents were young'. The children interviewed their Grandparents about life when they were growing up.

As part of STEM the children were asked to design a roller-coaster that would carry a marble from the top to the bottom without it falling off or being obstructed at any stage.

The children really enjoyed learning about the concept of area as the entire surface of an object.

Renaming in Subtraction.

In Second Class children have to learn the necessary skill of renaming in subtraction which can prove quite a challenge.

Senior Infants World Book Day 2019

We had a very exciting day today. Everyone arrived to school dressed to impress for World Book Day.

Fifth and Sixth Class have been learning all about Great Britain in Geography. This week, we worked in groups to do some research on Great Britain.

On Monday the 4th of February, two teams from our school participated in the Credit Union Quiz in the Hillgrove Hotel.

During the month of January Junior Infants adopted the role of Polar Explorers. Our classroom was transformed into the Arctic Region filled with Arctic animals, an igloo, water and lots of lots of ice! In the Role Play area the children wrapped up warm to face the Arctic conditions. They packed their bags and off they went on their adventures, spotting many familiar animals on their way.

Congratulations Kevin!  We were so proud to find that Kevin had won 3rd prize in Monaghan Credit Union Art competition for his picture, 'Forces of Nature'.  Well done!

Look at our fabulous Christmas wall hangings!  We appliqued on the felt shapes in the Fabric and Fibre strand of Art and added sequins, cord, embroidery stitches and glitter glue galore to produce our beautiful designs.  Well done everyone!

In October we were delighted to receive a visit from children's book author, Sheila Wilkinson, in association with Monaghan Library.

Number Work

During this lesson we revised numbers 1-6. We had great fun sucking up peas using a straw and putting them into bun cases.

Healthy Eating

In October we also learned about Healthy Eating. We made healthy food plates using play dough.

The Doctor's Surgery

We had great fun last term learning about myself. We set up a doctor's surgery and treated many very ill patients. We made binoculars to help us see, we did skeleton cutting activities and we built a small world hospital.

Senior Infants Tasting Session

We tasted a variety of foods.

We attended a Storytelling Workshop organised by Monaghan Town Library on 8th October.
