In March, 1st & 2nd Class began their class project to plan, plant and perfect their own class garden, as part of the Woodie's Budding Gardeners Programme.

Our picnic in the park was a huge success. Bigger children played with little children. Some relaxed on the picnic blankets. Siblings played together and teachers had a chat. The tug of war and the edible treats were a definite favourite for many.

Junior Infants went on a Spring Walk. We even brought our little spring lamb and chick to help us explore the signs of Spring. See photos below.
A Snow Day at School!

Junior Infants got their hats, coats and wellies on last Friday and had a fun time playing in the snow. Lots of snowballs were thrown and lots of snow angels were made. Check out the pictures below.
World Book Day 2023

1st & 2nd Class really embraced World Book Day 2023, and celebrations to mark the event lasted for the whole week, as the children enjoyed reading lots of different books, sharing their favourites with the class, relaxing in our chill zone, and completing creative activities on their chosen books.

World Book Day was a fun and a relaxing day!
We all brought our favourite book to school, along with a blanket and a pillow.
Mrs Kelso was very busy and had transformed the resources area into a cosy place where we could all lie down and take some time to read our favourite books. Thank you Mrs Kelso!!

A New Pupil for the Model School

What excitement there was in the Junior Infant classroom when Farmer Barry brought his lamb to our classroom.
The Junior Infants really enjoyed the experience and they even completed a health check on the lamb too.
The children listened to the lamb's heart using a stethoscope, gave it an injection and even took the lamb's temperature.
This bunch of children will all make fabulous vets in years to come!!

Scottish Dancing

Today was our first day Scottish dancing in St Patrick's hall.
The children had a fabulous time and were very fast learning all of the new dance moves!

5th Class Workshop

Last November, the children in 5th class read the book ' Irish Civil War 1922-23 Ava's Diary' for the One Book, One County reading initiative, part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme which marks key events in Irish history. Monaghan County Library organised a workshop to teach the children about the events of The Irish Civil War. The children thoroughly enjoyed the highly interactive and informative workshop.
Cycling Lessons

We are very excited to have begun our 6 week block of cycling lessons with our instructors Francis and Paul from Bike Green on the first Thursday back after Christmas. Our sessions are split between learning about the theory of cycling in the classroom and practising skills on the bicycles in the playground. The boys and girls are learning lots of useful technical information such as how to make sure your helmet is fitted accurately, cycling laws, the various road crossings you could meet and how to check your bike every time you go for a ride.

This year for our Christmas Art, as well as painting our windows, 6th class also made colourful Christmas character lanterns, Christmas cards in Paper Construction and these beautiful angels as part of our Fabric & Fibre strand in Art.

Christmas has arrived at the Model School! Yesterday 6th Class began our tradition of painting the windows for Christmas and today the boys and girls finished the job! Lots of paint, lots of laughter and although we were shivering outside taking the photos there lots of smiles at the end looking at their beautiful art work! Didn't they do a fabulous job? October's Healthy Eating Delights

October was full of healthy eating delights! This month our Well-being Committee were full of great ideas! Firstly we enjoyed porridge and stewed apple as an early morning treat, next came some fruit and vegetable smoothies with surprise ingredients and then we had gorgeous spiced pumpkin soup! Lots of these were very new tastes and it was great to see the children trying new healthy foods.
Samba Drumming Workshop

On 23rd September we were invited to take part in a Samba Drumming Workshop organised by Monaghan County Museum. We learned lots about different types of drums from around the world and a wide variety of rhythms to play on them. It was very loud but great fun and in the end we put together a fabulous piece of samba drumming.
The Marshmallow Challenge!

As part of our team-building activities on the 1st of September we had great fun with a Marshmallow tower building challenge! Each group was given four marshmallows and 10 pieces of spaghetti. The challenge was to build the highest tower capable of standing independently and holding a giant marshmallow on top by working collaboratively. There was lots of laughter, some scientific learning about the strongest shapes and even some sneaky nibbling of the marshmallows. A lovely way to start learning to work together to achieve our best!

5th Class Winter Art

Junior Infants Make Butter

Junior Infants have been learning lots about farming. They learned that cows give us milk and that milk is used for lots of different products that we find in the shop.
Junior Infants used double cream and created their own butter. Each child spread the butter on their own slice of fresh bread, which was served along with some pumpkin soup.

Mrs Marshall was very impressed when the children came up with the idea to re-create the nursery rhyme during outdoor play.
Kandinsky Art - Junior Infant Style

After learning 2D shapes, Junior Infants looked at Kandinsky's 'Circles' artwork.
This inspired the children to create their own images using 2D shapes.
Ms Hazlett's Big Day

Ms Hazlett gets married! The fourth class children got the celebrations started in style and we enjoyed a fun filled day with balloons, cake and fancy dress to mark their teacher's last day as Ms Hazlett. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Duffy back to school in January! Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Duffy. We wish you both a long and happy life together.

Science Week 2022

First & Second class practised their desiging, making, problem-solving and communication skills during their Science week STEM challenge. There was a lot of trial and error, but they showed great initiative, and completed the challenge with success!
As we were learning about the topic of Water, the class also made their own models of the Water Cycle to investigate the process involved in making rain.
October-Healthy Eating Month

Our Healthy Eating Month was a real success! Every Friday the boys and girls were excited to see what delicious, healthy treat would arrive to our classroom! We enjoyed eating our fruit platters, smoothies, porridge and pumpkin soup! For a few pupils, this was the first time they would have tasted some of this food and there were lots of positve comments. We would like to thank the Well-being Committee for all their hard work in preparing the food.It was a great way to end each week and we loved it!
Children's Book Festival 2022

Our class participated in one of the many online events organised by Monaghan Library for this years festival. We joined the award winning Irish author illustrator Paddy Donnelly as he shared his latest book' Fox & Son Tailers', and showed us how to sketch a character from the story. We also entered the Mr.Men or Little Miss Competition, where we had to design a brand new character and write a short paragraph to describe them.
