School Activities

Hi everybody,

I hope everyone is well and is keeping safe during these changing days and weeks. I'm sure you are all missing school and catching up with all of your friends too. I do miss teaching you all everyday too!

I've uploaded the China project criteria to the website, just incase some of you have lost it or mislaid it over the past few days. Remember if there's a section that you're struggling with, leave it out and move on to the next part.

Click on 'Read More' to see the instructions for the project.

Keep safe everyone!

To keep the little folk in your home busy and to facilitate parents as they guide their children through this period of learning at home I have put together a plan of work to support you. We have completed quite a chunk of the senior infant curriculum to date and this allows for lots of opportunities to revise some of the topics and subjects already taught. Please ensure that the correct number and letter formation is used, as bad habits develop very easily and can be difficult to break.

Please find below a Plan of Work to keep little hands and minds busy during this period of school closure. Repetition and revision is a vital part of learning for younger children so these activities will give them an opportunity to consolidate their learning. All listed activities are based on previously taught topics so the children should be able to work confidently with a little bit of guidance and direction from an adult. As regards number and letter formation, please ensure the children are following the correct formation rules as practised bad habits are very hard to break.

As part of Seachtain an Gaeilge, 3rd and 4th class teamed up with Mrs Stewart’s Senior Infants.

Here are a few pictures of third and fourth class working with senior infants. Some children were reading Irish books, some playing a matching game, playing Deir Ó Grádaigh, playing in the siopa, cé hé mise? etc...

It was a great way to get using our Gaeilge!!!

Check out the art work and report writing on the topic of animals! What impressive work!!

During the school closure, the Department of Education has outlined that learning will still continue at home. I am aware that in the current situation it is difficult and the children will struggle to learn new topics. Therefore, the work which has been set is self-explanatory and covers a lot of revision. I encourage the children to try their best with all of the activities below.

Fourth class boys were invited to go to a GAA blitz in St. Macartan's Secondary School.

Seven boys signed up. They all played extremely well!

Well Done Boys!

We were busy busy busy singing before Christmas.

We had a great time at the AIB bank singing for all the customers.

A big thank you to the AIB for inviting us!

We were delighted to be invited to First Monaghan Senior Citizen's Chirstmas Dinner to spread some Christmas cheer. The children sang their hearts out as they sang some well known Christmas carols and songs.

We were so thankful for the juice and treats afterwards!

Third and Fourth class took part in STEPS young engineer's project.

The children were given the task of creating their own prototype in groups. The children had to reflect on something in the environment around them and suggest ways in which it could be improved. It was a great exercise that allowed for lots of positive discussion in groups.

Some children looked at how boats can cause pollution. They decided to create a boat that worked on natural energy rather than on fuel would allow it to be cleaner for the environment.

Other groups had a number of children who wore glasses. They suggested that it can be irritating on a rainy day when your glasses steam up. This group decided to give their glasses wipers and a light.

Another group created a machine to produce bubble gums. They had a very snazzy design!

One group felt speeding on the roads was an issue. Therefore they created a prototype to alert drivers of the speed with a flashing light to attract the driver's attention.

Another group, created a 'Timer'. This timer was to encourage more activity in children.

Lastly, another group created a gymnastics kit for children with disabilities. It was lovely to see the children being inclusive.

Have a look through our photos to see the prototypes being created and the finished project.

It's true to say that there are many future engineers in our classroom!!

Nothing better to get us into the Christmas spirit than music and stories! We enjoyed a lovely morning in the library where we heard stories, played music and combined both to make some wonderful musical stories.

Niall de Búrca had the children eating out of his hand at the museum with his fabulous storytelling, great sense of humour and very funny expressions. He managed to incorporate some music and singing into his stories too. A lovely Christmas treat thoroughly enjoyed by all - even the teachers!

After learning about the journey of a letter from the post box to its destination, we had some posting of our own to do. We kept the post man busy delivering our 'Thank You' cards and a Christmas present to Peace (a little Ugandan girl we sponsor through World Vision). We made the cards, wrote the messages and addressed the envelopes and off we went to the Post Office. This was a great way to work on our writing genre 'To socialise'. We compared the distance each parcel had to travel and the price it cost to post it. The staff at the Post Office were so helpful that we sang them 'We wish you a Merry Christmas' before leaving!

We completed a unit of work on 'People Who Help Us' and focused particularly on 'The Hospital'. The children shared their own personal experiences of hospitals and enjoyed learning about the different occupations within the hospital. We invited some of our parents who work in this environment to come and talk to the children about their work. We had the pleasure of spending a morning with two nurses and a radiographer. We asked plenty of questions, were given lots of good advice and loved having some real life professionals to play with in the Role Play Area. We re-enacted all we learned during our drama lessons when we found poor Humpty Dumpty in a terrible state at the bottom of the wall!

We also had a visit from the people at Barretstown who work with children who are sick in hospital. They introduced us to 'Chemo Duck' and taught us how to be a good friend to someone who sick.

We concluded our theme with a visit from paramedic 'Granda Tony' in his ambulance. Paramedic Tony taught us how to ring for an ambulance in an emergency and showed us how the ambulance driver finds the way to our house.

A big 'Thank You' to all of our visiting professionals who took the time to visit the Junior Infant classroom and share their expertise.

Fruit and Vegetable Shop

In the Autumn term we worked on the theme of 'Fruit and Vegetables'. The Health Promoting Schools Committee taught us about our Healthy Eating Policy and we checked our lunchboxes to make sure we were eating all the right things. The children had an opportunity to try some fruit and vegetables from the shop we had opened in our Role Play Area. We enjoyed vegetables with hummus, fruit salad and some delicious pumpkin soup. These all went down a treat and the children enjoyed trying some new foods - lots of which are now appearing regularly in the lunchboxes. A great healthy start to the school year!

Junior Infants 2019 - All settled in and enjoying their new school with lots of new friends!

3rd and 4th class wrote poems titled 'Be the reason someone smiles today' for the Monaghan Mental Health Association.

Congratulations to our two merit winners and two highly commended.

We had a lovely night at the prize giving ceremony in The Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan.

Fun with Fractions!

3rd and 4th class concluded their learning of fractions with some active learning.

The children participated in various stations, such as a loop game of fractions, some ICT fraction games, using dominoes, Fraction SNAP and Fraction pizzas. It was a great way to learn and revise equivalent fractions.

Fourth class took part in a Futsal bltiz in Colaiste Oriaill.

We had a fantastic boys and girls team.

Well Done to everybody!

During maths week, we had a lesson using IZAK 9.

We created a wall using the multiples of three. We also out the IZAK 9 back together showing the 2D shape on each side. It was tricky but we completed it. Great team work by all!

Senior Infants explored the themes of Myself and My Body during September and October.

In art, we learned there are three primary colours - yellow, blue and red.

We found out that when we mix the primary colours, we can make secondary colours!

It was a great lesson!

Welcome back to school! Our first topic of the year was 'School'.

The children learned lots about schools in the past and compared it to schools nowadays.

We even got to see pictures of the Model School back in the past.

Check out our fabulous art pastel pictures of 'Our School'.

3rd and forth class 2017 - 2018 Review

Celebrating World Book Day was the most comfortable day in school EVER!

We celebrated Work Book Day by having a 'Bedtime Theme'.

The children had to come to school in their PJs and bring a book with them.

During the day, the children had the opportunity to read their book in their PJs. However, to make it even more like bedtime, the children all had a lovely cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows to accompany their reading time!

Fifth class were learning about 3D Shapes and Prisms.

They had a fabulous time testing different types of sweet treats to see if they were prisms or not.

They had to categorise the sweet treats after slicing them. If the shape stayed the same shape after being sliced, then it was a prism. If the shape changed to a different shape, then it was not a prism.

During Maths Week, Fourth and Fifth Class completed lots of activities.

One of the activities was 'Mathopoly'. We all enjoyed it and loved applying our Monopoly skills too.

Check out these fabulous Valentines' gifts made by Fourth and Fifth class.

The children created a pinch pot using clay. Each pot was beautiful and the children worked very hard on perfecting them. They were beautiful gifts for Valentine's day.

On Valentine's day, the children created cards. The children were encouraged to think of their own interests and create a spin on it.

Some John Deere fans titled their card with 'You are very DEERE to me', while others had 'Spreading the Love' illustrated along with a slurry tanker , 'Bee my Valentine' illustrated along with a bee and of course the special 'Happy Valentine's Day' title illustrated with lovely Valentine themed pictures.

Mrs Marshall's classroom have learned so much about trees, forests and plants. We learned how forests are so important and that The Amazon Rainforest is the lungs of the Earth.

The children created their own mini rainforests in jam jars.

They had to layer the jam jar with over 1cm of stones, add soil, water and seeds.

It was a great experiment. We had a great time watching the plants grow too.

We took part in Food Dudes for one week and really enjoyed sampling different fruit and vegetables.

Last Friday, we dressed in the colour of the fruit or vegetable in our lunchbox.

As a treat, we even got to make strawberry and banana smoothies.

Yum!!

Fourth and fifth class went on a fieldtrip around St Peter’s Lake to observe man-made and natural items. We had great fun and spotted lots of materials on our trip.

Boys and Girls,

I know this is tough to have to work on alone on Maths when we are all apart but we have done quite a bit on area already.  You are all doing a great job so far!   Read the examples and clues carefully.  I am using the text book each time that is easiest for you to work from on your own and ordering the sums so they come in baby steps from what you already know.  Try your best.  Read the clues written here for each type of sum that you need to do.  If you really can’t get a particular sum move on to the next and I will work through it in your corrections and set you a similar one to try again yourself.

Read CAREFULLY and THINK clearly.  I have every faith in you.

But Don’t STRESS!  Email me instead. We will have a Bob-The- Builder moment!  Just do your best. Mrs K

PS Don’t forget my usual rant:  Title EVERY page!  Number every sum!

Hi everyone,

I have loved seeing all your photos and videos of the activities during the week. Here are a few more ideas to keep you busy and learning this week. Keep out in the sunshine and make the most of this fabulous weather.

Read Chapter 5 'The Beaches of Ireland'  and answer questions 1 - 6.

Date, label and rule in your copy.

As you know we have been directed to set work for this period.  As we are aware that some of you may be working from home or children may be away from you with relations etc I have tried to set work that children can go on with on their own.

The bulk of work for 5th & 6th is their History project which we were just beginning last week.  As I will not be working with them on it every few days and they now must complete it on their own, I have included simplified instructions and shortened it.  We have spent considerable time since Christmas in learning research and reporting skills and the children are very able in working on this by themselves.  A paragraph along with diagrams, photos, a map, etc is sufficient and very long passages of writing are not necessarily needed.

I have also set operations and weight which we have been working on in Maths is also good revision for both classes.  Other areas such as Science, RE, Music and Art will help provide variety without stress but should not be considered essential if they are struggling to complete their project.

As children in our class are older and many have their own, or access to, devices I am loading each subject page individually as they can screen shot and print them (if they wish/ have a printer to do so) and are easier to see for themselves and will hopefully therefore be easier for you also.

Work set should be done to the best of their ability but if your child is worried about an activity or a question or one topic of their project, I am quite happy for you to advise them to skip on to the next.  Please emphasise to them that we would not want any child to be worrying about their work.

I hope these activities will prove useful in keeping your child learning over this period.  Reading their book for the oral language challenge would also be a good distraction from all that's going on.   Other activities are also listed on the News & Updates section of the website.

Thank you for your help in helping your child access this information.

We hope each one of you and yours stay safe and well, and we look forward to seeing your children back in school as normal.
