As part of STEM the children were asked to design a roller-coaster that would carry a marble from the top to the bottom without it falling off or being obstructed at any stage.

The children really enjoyed learning about the concept of area as the entire surface of an object.

On Monday the 4th of February, two teams from our school participated in the Credit Union Quiz in the Hillgrove Hotel.

During the month of January Junior Infants adopted the role of Polar Explorers. Our classroom was transformed into the Arctic Region filled with Arctic animals, an igloo, water and lots of lots of ice! In the Role Play area the children wrapped up warm to face the Arctic conditions. They packed their bags and off they went on their adventures, spotting many familiar animals on their way.

Congratulations Kevin!  We were so proud to find that Kevin had won 3rd prize in Monaghan Credit Union Art competition for his picture, 'Forces of Nature'.  Well done!

Look at our fabulous Christmas wall hangings!  We appliqued on the felt shapes in the Fabric and Fibre strand of Art and added sequins, cord, embroidery stitches and glitter glue galore to produce our beautiful designs.  Well done everyone!

In October we were delighted to receive a visit from children's book author, Sheila Wilkinson, in association with Monaghan Library.

In October we also learned about Healthy Eating. We made healthy food plates using play dough.

We tasted a variety of foods.

We attended a Storytelling Workshop organised by Monaghan Town Library on 8th October.

Maths Week this year ran from October 10th - 18th.  In 5th & 6th Classes we did an escape-the-room type challenge in our pods.  Some of the challenges were really tricky but Mrs Kelso and Mrs Berry were amazed at the determination and inventiveness of some of our pupils who just would not give up until they cracked the final code!  Super work!

As part of our work on Plant life in Living Things in Science we took part in National Tree Day's big campaign to plant 1,500 native tree saplings in schools around Ireland.  Our wild cherry arrived last week as a tiny sapling and is now safely planted in the science garden.  Hopefully, it will be strong enough to weather the winter and grow big and strong!

5th & 6th Classes are loving Maths Workshop!  We might not be able to move around stations and share resources as we used to but with lots of problem-solving challenges, drills, DT, games and teaching stations there's lots of fun and great mathematical learning going on every fortnight on our Maths Workshop days.         Well done, Boys and Girls! Keep up the great work!

Welcome to 5th & 6th Class!  It's great to see everyone looking so rested and relaxed and full of enthusiasm for a new term together!  We are looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

Sadly, this year we were unable to have our usual Christmas celebrations with parents.  We did have great fun however in adapting, performing and recording a play for the other classes to watch.  Mince-pie obsessed Santas tried to sneak treats under Mrs Claus' watchful eye and unfortunate foxes, a frugal Goldilocks, misunderstood wolves and many others all tried to persuade Santa to move them to the Nice List!

December was the season for bringing a little festive cheer to all our lives with an advent calendar full of treats.  Under each beautifully illustrated date of the month were lots of treats to encourage us through the dark days and dreary headlines.

With good co-operation and reaching targets we enjoyed a festive hot chocolate,  painting the windows,  a movie, some extra PE and lots more!

We were delighted to take part in a project to make Christmas table centres for Blackwater House. The children were glad to be doing something to bring a little Christmas spirit to the residents and had great fun make the table centres.  We think they looked super!

In September we tried out a new way to communicate our learning in History - making a movie!  Each group was set one aspect of the story of how a gold salamander found on the Antrim coast tied in to the story of the Spanish Armada.

I was amazed at how creative the children were in each telling their part in all sorts of ways.  We had wee old gentlemen fishing for

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your help and support for your child at this time when we are having to do things a little differently.  If you have not yet had a chance to send us an email to the address Mrs Mills sent you please do when you can as we cannot sent login details until then.

For the typing club please Click here.   I have set the same individual login details here as for iknowit maths.  This will be available from tomorrow and although it is not set as classwork, typing is a useful skill which will stand to children in the future when working on projects or assignments and some children enjoy doing the activities just for fun.  If your child already has a login previously set by Mrs Berry please continue to use this as otherwise you would lose your progress to date in the program.  If you cannot remember the details please email me and I will ask her to re-send them to you.

We understand that this is a very challenging time and for various reasons you may not be able to help out with schoolwork as you would like.  Please do encourage your child to do their best and get in touch with any questions or queries they may have.  Details of work children can photograph and send to us by email are included below but again I would urge you to do what is manageable for you in this situation.

Above all, we hope you enjoy the Easter holidays.  Try to keep the children exercising and getting fresh air safely. I hope you can find some positive things to do as a family like board games, funny tv shows/ movies, baking, art activities etc that keep them smiling despite all that's going on as older children's minds are often very busy hiding what they are thinking.  We hope to add a few ideas of fun things to do on the symbaloo page over the holidays as we come to them so keep an eye on it and the website.

New work will be posted for the week after the holidays.  Keep up the good work!

Happy Easter,

Lorna Kelso and Melissa Heaslip
