School Activities

Congratulations to Emily Hall for coming third place in the Monaghan Credit Union Easter Poem Competition!!
We are all delighted for you Emily!

Well done!

We celebrated World Book Day this year with a PJ day.  All the children (and teachers!) got to wear their lovely cosy pyjamas all day and were treated to a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows.  The children also brought in one of their favourite bedtime stories to share with the class. To make a good day even better the sun was shining so we got to spend some time reading our favourite books outside in the sunshine! Have a look!

3rd Class were learning about The Vikings in History recently.  We learned all about Viking longships and how to draw one, we designed our own Viking shields and made Freeze frames in Drama based on a Viking story.

In 2nd Class, we've been working hard on our narrative writing!

This year for World Book Day,  the boys and girls dressed in their cosy pyjamas, robes and slippers and shared their favourite bedtime stories. We all enjoyed a lovely cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows as we listened to everyone describing their favourite book to read at bedtime.

We celebrated Pancake Tuesday in 1st Class with lots of delicious pancakes. We learned about the history of Pancake Tuesday and practised our Procedural writing as we made our yummy pancakes!

December was a busy month in the Junior Infant classroom with the children taking on the very important role of Santa's little helpers. After some necessary elf training the children set to work in Santa's workshop.

The children spent the month of November learning about people who help us in the local community.

Christmas

We had great fun making Christmas decorations using pieces of material and polystyrene balls.

Take a look at some of the different activities 1st Class completed during Maths Week.

Autumn brings a lot of change and this didn't go unnoticed by the Junior Infants!

We enjoyed taking part in lots of Mathematical activities to celebrate Maths Week. We incorporated the environment around us into our learning by looking for 2D and 3D shapes on our shape trail, sorting and classifying items found on our Autumn trail and using them to make patterns.

Indoor and Outdoor play is a very important part of the children's learning in Junior Infants.

Our first priority in Junior Infants is to develop the children's fine motor skills in preparation for writing.

We welcomed 26 fabulous new Junior Infants to the Model School this year. The children arrived to school excited and ready to start on their new adventure in 'big school'! We hope the children enjoy all the new experiences in the classroom and make lots of new friends along the way.

1st Class have been busy making leaf creatures with all their autumn leaves. They were also very excited at the arrival of a prickly, little visitor to our school yard. Max the Hedgehog ( as he was named ) appeared just as we were learning about animals preparing to hibernate for winter, and also as we finished our story 'The Hodgeheg'.

Have a look at our Leaf Creatures!

We took part in a live, interactive session with the children's author Rachel Bright. Rachel began by reading her new story 'Humphrey the Whale Who Wanted More'. This was followed by a guided drawing session of Humphrey the Whale, and another of her famous characters, The Love Monster.  Take a look at our wonderful sketches!

September has been a very busy month for the girls and boys in 1st Class. We have enjoyed getting to know each other again after the summer and have settled nicely into our daily classroom routine.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break. Unfortunately, due to school closures, we have to move to remote learning for the next few weeks. Mrs Mills will forward the weekly plan of work to you on Monday. My contact details will be included in this email. It will take a while to get back into the routine of schoolwork again after the long break, while also adjusting to learning from home, so please do not place unnecessary pressure on yourselves to complete all tasks, and only do what you can. Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Take care and stay safe!

It has been an exciting couple of weeks for the boys and girls in 1st & 2nd Class, as we all moved into our lovely new classroom!

Back in October 1st & 2nd Class focused on Interest Talks as part of our Oral Language lessons. The boys and girls worked hard to prepare and present a short talk on their chosen topic of interest.

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a fun Active Week and made the most of the beautiful weather! You all did wonderful work this week, and I really enjoyed looking at all your activities, so thank you very much for the updates, and well done for continuing to give your best effort to work at home - I know it is not easy but you are doing great!

So this week I will send the plan of work and the worksheets via email. I think this is much more manageable for everyone! Have a lovely weekend!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your updates during the week, I have really enjoyed looking at your work and hearing how you are all getting on. Some of you have posted lovely pictures and recordings on SeeSaw and these have been wonderful to see!! Again feel free to manage this plan of work in a way that suits you best.  If you have yet to contact me with your details, please do so, as I am emailing important resources that you will need for next week.

Hello everyone,

Well done on all the wonderful work that was completed this week! I really enjoyed looking at your lovely pictures on SeeSaw! Here is the plan of work for April 27th-1st May. I will email worksheets to parents, so if you have not yet contacted me then please do so in order to receive these.

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and are feeling rejuvenated and ready to continue with your learning at home! Again I have presented this week's work as a daily plan but as previously stated, only do what is manageable for you and your situation at home.

Hello First Class,

Thank you for all  the wonderful pictures and updates, they really do bring a smile to my face, and make me feel very proud of each and every one of you, as you continue to work so well at home.

I think everyone has earned a well deserved break from schoolwork over the Easter holidays! Try to stay active and get lots of fresh air, and above all enjoy some fun, family time together.

Best Wishes to you all over Easter,

Ms Keenan

Here we go again! I hope everyone is keeping well. I have presented this plan of work in a daily format but feel free to do whatever suits you best. Please do not feel all work must be completed as I am aware every family situation is different so do as much as you can. I can be contacted using the email address given via the school email that was sent earlier today.

As you are aware we have been directed to set work for pupils over the next two weeks. In light of this I have included a plan of work for 1st Class. Most of the work involves activities that children are very familiar with and so should be straightforward for them to complete. Please see School News & Updates for other suggested activities.

1st Class took part in a number of fun, yet challenging Maths activities during Maths Week.

Welcome to 1st Class 2019-2020!

We are looking forward to having a great year together!

There was lots of excitement in class today as the boys and girls ( and teacher!) dressed up to celebrate World Book Day!

We have been learning all about Water in our Science and Geography lessons.

First Class read the story 'Granny's Quilt' in History.

Wood - Stone - Ballons

During Science week 1st Class attended a workshop based on Forces.

As part of our focus on Report Writing, 1st Class learned lots of facts and information about the owl.

During October 1st Class learned all about the seasonal changes in autumn.

We were out and about looking at all the different leaves and types of trees around the school grounds.

1st Class attended a storytelling workshop hosted by Niall de Burca on October 9th in the library.

Monaghan Model 2017 - 2018 First Class Review

Our Year In Pictures

Early this school year we had our Geography lesson at St Peter’s Lake.

We were treated to a Gymnastics lesson at Border Bounce Gymnastics Club!

We had great fun jiving at our Barn Dance!

In February, we learned all about Spain!
We learned about the culture, food and day-to-day life!

We’ve had a busy first few weeks back in school!

In January, we learned all about space!

In November, we learned all about different types of Homes and Houses.

We examined different houses and learned about the building process.

In October, we learned all about Autumn.

We’ve had busy first few months in 2nd Class!

During Maths Week the children were engaged in playful experiences that helped them to learn in a fun way, while developing their mathematical skills.

Senior Infants have just completed a unit of work on the topic 'Myself'. We set up a Doctor's Surgery in the classroom and also ran a baby clinic.

Literacy Stations are a definite favourite in our classroom. The children get to work on many different aspects of literacy in a fun way. There is lots of variety and many opportunities to develop our literacy skills.

1st & 2nd Class had so much fun during Active Week! We had lots of different activities throughout the week - Soccer skills with the FAI, Sports Day, PE circuits, and a great Pound Class with Pamela!  Take a look at our pictures!

The boys and girls really enjoyed all our Space themed lessons during May.

We have been very busy learning all about the butterfly. In our Art classes we made beautiful clay butterflies. In Science we learned about the life cycle of the butterfly, and we also got to see the real thing in our classroom.

1st & 2nd  Class pupils celebrated World Book Day in great style on March 12th! We had lots of fun trying to guess all the different storybook characters. The boys and girls talked about the character they had chosen and made beautiful story quilts based on their favourite story.

World Book Day is a important one in the Model School and as always everyone made a great effort to dress up as a character from a book. The children also prepared an oral report on a favourite or much loved book, recorded it and sent it to school via the Seesaw App. We had a great time listening to our peers and now have some new book suggestions for our class library. I think you will all agree everyone looked amazing and we had a great day as we celebrated World Book Day 2021

1st and 2nd Class were invited to take part in our 'Draw With Rob' art activity. Rob Biddulph is an illustrator, who posts step by step videos demonstrating how to draw lots of different characters. I was amazed by the drawings completed by the boys and girls! We certainly have lots of budding artists in our class. Take a look at some of their work.

 Hi everyone!

I hope you are all keeping safe and well. It is hard to believe we have come to the end of January. Unfortunately we have another few weeks of remote learning, but hopefully we will be back at school very soon.

The first signs of spring are beginning to appear, as the lovely snowdrops have arrived in our gardens and along the roadside, so at least we can all look forward to the brighter days ahead!

Thank you for all your wonderful work! I hope you are enjoying the activities - I know I am really enjoying seeing your work and I am very impressed with how well you are all doing!

Take care,

Ms Keenan

Hello boys and girls!

I am so sad not to be able to see you in the classroom, especially as I missed you all so much when I was off sick in December. I hope Santa was good to you and you all got what you asked for. I also hope you’ve been keeping safe and enjoying lots of fun in the snow!
I have planned some work for you to be completed over the next two weeks. Remember to only do what you can manage and what is suitable to your home situation as I am aware that lots of mammies and daddies are trying to look after you at home while working hard at the same time.

Junior Infants enjoyed a December filled with Christmas cheer in the classroom. Our theme for the month was 'Santa's Workshop' so we adopted the role of Santa and his elves during the play sessions.

Junior Infants have enjoyed their first term at their new school and have encountered lots of new learning experiences.

On Friday 11th December the children arrived in school looking very festive indeed. This was a great way to raise funds for The Children's Health Foundation Crumlin. Spirits were high and they all looked fantastic too.

To celebrate Maths Week the children had to solve mathematical problems in their groups each day at the start of our Maths lesson. To do this they had to use their whiteboards to follow the Problem Solving rule; RUDECC. The letters stand for Read the problem, Underline the important pieces of information, Draw a pictrure of the problem, Estimate an answer, Calculate the answer and finally Check over the work to make sure it makes sense.

Hello again and welcome back!

We have been busy as little bees since starting back in September. I think the children are like myself and are all happy to be back in the classroom. In order to settle ourselves back in we were working hard on learning about our well-being and getting to know each other again.

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all still keeping well and managing to cope at home. I have attached your next unit of work as a pdf document in an email that Mrs. Mills will send onto your parents. You will also find other attachments that you need for the next fortnight of work and you will need to use some of the ones that I sent you in the last unit of work too.

I'm missing you all and the school environment desperately but I hope you're all coping as best you can with the work that I am setting. It's all new to all of us so lets not be too hard on ourselves and just do our best!

Take care, stay safe and wash your hands!

School Closure Work for Mrs. Lochner’s, 2nd and 3rd Class

Hello again everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the break over the Easter holidays as much as possible given the current situation.

Hello Junior Infants,

I hope you have all had a wonderful Easter and are continuing to enjoy the lovely sunshine. As we are continuing to learn from home I have attached some activities for you to work on this week. All parents will receive an email with printable worksheets and activities. If anyone does not receive this then please let us know via the school email address.

Second Instalment of School Closure Work for Mrs. Lochner’s, 2nd and 3rd Class.

*** This unit of work is for a fortnight, with "Easter Holidays" in the middle of this unit, you have plenty of time to complete this work before the next installment which will be begin on Monday 27th April.***

Hello again everyone! I hope you are all keeping well and continuing to wash those hands and keep your social distancing going? I am missing each and every one of you very much and only wish I was able to see you all in person, to do this next unit of work with you all. Unfortunately, as you’re all aware this is not possible as of yet and we therefore have to do our very best to keep up with our learning at home. I hope that the work I have given so far hasn’t proven too difficult and you have managed to get through it without torturing your parents too much!

I would like to remind you all that when you’re doing this next section of work to remember the standard of work that I expect off you and that you ensure your work is completed to that standard each and every day. Finally, God has gifted us with this beautiful, sunny weather to help us get through this tough time so please make the most of it while you can and enjoy it! Take care and stay safe!

In an attempt to make home life over the next few weeks as normal as possible, I have planned some straight forward work that should keep your child/children sufficiently occupied. The following work has been chosen so your child should be able to complete it without assisstance in most cases. If they encounter any difficult questions and/or activities please don't get frustrated, just move on to another task. This plan of work is given to help support parents and not to cause any added stress at what is an extraordinary time, so bear this in mind.

A vital part of children's learning has been attributed to their ability to assess and critique their own work. This consolidates the learning objective qand allows them to see what they have done well and what they could improve on in the future. It is a valuable skill that will be used in all areas of everyday life in the future. Here you can see them using an assessment rubric for their Recount writing - where they recounted their summer holidays.

In order to encourage the children to present their written work neatly and do their handwriting to the best of their ability I have created the "Wonder Wall" where only the best work will be photocopied and put on display for everyone to admire. As you can see it's filling up very fast and has proved a great incentive!

Maths week is a time for us to demonstrate to the children how fun Maths is and how this subject plays a major role in our everyday lives.

We had a busy first term getting to know each other and becoming friends. In doing this we played a lot of ice-breaker games in all subjects and had lots of fun, especially in Art. Here are just some of our wonderful creations on display in and around the classroom.

Learning about Time.

Learning Time in Second class can be a challenge for lots of boys and girls so it is important to make it as fun and enjoyable as possible.

The children have a "Fuzzy Jar" which they get filled with two pom poms for every positive/fuzzy story they can tell from their yard break.

World Book Day 2019!

Second class were a sight to behold on World Book Day.

Hibernation Stations and Snowball Structures

Hibernation Station

This challenge allowed students to experiment with different forms of insulation and renewable energy and how these are applicable in the real world.
